Dolphins Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

News - Mon, 2010-05-17 16:00

Safety first was certainly not the Dolphins' motto last season. Their 24th-ranked pass defense was picked apart on a weekly basis.

Although rookie cornerbacks Sean Smith and Vontae Davis (team-leading four interceptions) had respectable first seasons, Davis struggled at times with some of the AFC East's taller receivers when playing the ball in the air. But clearly, Miami's softest spot came in the back end where free-agent bust Gibril Wilson struggled in coverage, leading often to runaway receivers and tight ends.

The Dolphins released Wilson, basically admitting their costly mistake in talent evaluation, and opted to fill the free safety spot from within with either holdovers Chris Clemons, Tryone Culver, Jason Allen or fifth-round rookie Reshad Jones.
